My final trek in Sangre de Cristo Mountains this summer was the Macey Lakes trail. One more alpine experience for the year was not disappointing.
Hiking to Music Pass and Sand Creek Lakes in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains is one spectacular day hike! I enjoyed this one with my oldest daughter on a beautiful summer day.

Enjoy alpine lakes below very aggressively rising rock faces, setting up dramatic and contrasting lines between the flat calming effect of the water and the sharply upward ascending summits of sentinel-like peaks.
The contrast between rugged granite peaks patched with snow, alpine tundra saturated with wild flowers, and the purity of aqua blue lakes all bundled together in one eye soaking moment is indescribable.
After only a couple hours sleep, I woke at 4:30 a.m. to hike up a 14,000-foot summit in the beautiful San Juan Mountains in Colorado. Uncompahgre Peak!
