The Interest in a Solo Project was never seriously considered until some time into recording the set of tracks that became David on Earth. A few subtle suggestions by his producer, Dusty Hughes, introduced the idea to David that maybe this could become a nice CD collection. As time went on through the recording process, the decision was made to move forward with the CD project. This was in April 2008.
The Studio Time extended from the last week in March through the end of April 2008. The studio location was David's home studio. The tracks were then handed over to Dusty for mastering and post production work. Although, not all the tracks were recorded in David's home studio.
The Tracks that were not recorded in David's studio were added by Dusty in his studio. The orchestra parts, the piano parts, the lead guitar part in
Sky and
It's Time, the nature sounds (waves in wind in
Sky, the waves in
Home), some of the sitar parts, and the choir in
When Worlds Collide were all added in production to the original tracks. Specifically: The solo on
Sky is a dulcimer played through a Marshall stack. The choir in
When Worlds Collide is a vintage
Mellotron. The piano on
Second Chances is a Steinway B.
Only One in the only song on the CD that was not an original composition by David. This was a song Dusty and David had collaborated on in 2007. David wrote the lyrics and Dusty wrote the composition. This is a song that has been performed live by the band Polaradio. Both David and Dusty are members of this band.
The Sitar Parts in When Worlds Collide are layered. The primary sitar part was played on an Ibanez AR305AV 6-string guitar tuned to C-G-C-G-C-E. David had lived in Turkey for a couple years in the 80's and was captured by the traditional music of the area. This world music exposure and remembering the psychedelic music of the 60's early 70's brought on the sitar idea for this song. This also brought back some good memories of playing sitar riffs with his Air Force dorm mates during some marathon weekends. But that's a story for another time.
The Inspiration is a feed off of the life and faith of David. There's not a purposeful theme in this collection except a mental log of what was going on in the life of David during and just previous to the writing on the music. Refer to the liner for each of these songs in the lyrics section of this website for more details on each song.
The Bass Tracks were mostly done on an Ibanez AR305AV 6-string guitar and later changed using ACID plug-ins.
All Acoustic Guitar Tracks were done on an Ibanez AEF30 Acoustic Guitar. The recording was on dual channels, one clean direct-in and another using an MXL-4000, 0db setting and Omni pattern. The physical setting was at the entrance of a narrow hallway (about 3 foot wide and 8 foot long). The idea was to capture the natural acoustics of the space and then mix down the two inputs differently for each song.
The CD cover picture of the old boots was taken in David's back yard garden in the early spring before the soil was turned over and prepared for planting. A lot of symbolism here. And the boots were actually pretty new. David states, "probably the most uncomfortable boots I've ever owned... kind of appropriate for this whole project, being that it's a little uncomfortable stepping out with a debut solo CD."
Airplay for some of the releases from David on Earth can be heard via the DeltaWav radio network throughout the United States and available via pod cast through the same network.
